For International Collectibles and Antiques Show exhibitor John Steele, what began 40 years go as youthful wanderlust and an unwavering interest in Asian culture has evolved into a career of collecting Asian fine art and artifacts.
A native New Zealander, John began his travels backpacking throughout the Far East and Europe, then on to Western Canada, back home to New Zealand and finally into the United States.
“I started traveling in my 20s,” he laughed, “And then I never really stopped.”
John has long been fascinated by all things Asian, which helped shape his current specialization in Orientalia and fine Chinese and Japanese art. His collection includes such rare treasures as Chinese tomb jade, ivories, porcelain, bronzes and statuary – with some pieces dating back to several thousand BC. He also has a unique collection of Buddhist art and related items, specifically from the Tibetan discipline, an area of special interest to him.
John credits his travels with the origin of his current career and his emotional connection to this genre of collectibles.
“When you’ve traveled in South Asia, from Afghanistan to Japan, and nearly every country in between, it makes the culture and the pieces more relevant.”
From the extraordinary meditative scrollwork of Buddhist “Thankas” to his current vast array of 19th Century Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, John’s remarkable collection is one that will entice both novice and experienced collectors alike, with hand-selected pieces shipped directly from China and painstakingly chosen from renowned national dealers.
John currently travels the antique and collectibles circuit in Florida, Atlanta, North Carolina and Virginia. You can find him and his exceptional wares at the International Collectibles and Antiques Show Spring Classic in Charlotte, NC this April.
